Harriet is a Paediatric Specialty Trainee based in the North East of England. Since graduating from Newcastle University Medical School in 2015, she has focused her training on delivering compassionate, effective care to children, young people and their families.
Alongside her clinical work, Harriet has experience conducting laboratory-based research into the cellular processes underlying disease having undertaken a Master of Research into paediatric leukaemia. However, in her daily clinical practice she has been struck by the constant and wide-reaching impact of health inequalities on many of the patients she sees. She feels a deep frustration witnessing the early divergence in the wellbeing of children and young people, often shaped by factors beyond the hospital walls. It is the potential to help improve lives at a broader, systemic level that has drawn her toward a growing interest in population health.
In 2023, she completed the Health Education England Population Health Fellowship, which deepened her understanding of the wider determinants of health and the importance of cross sector collaboration. This experience strengthened her commitment to integrating population health principles into clinical care.
As a frontline doctor working in an acute hospital setting, Harriet believes it is vital for resident doctors to play an active role in shaping a more preventative, equitable healthcare system. She is passionate about ensuring trainees are supported in embedding population health approaches into their work and are empowered to become future leaders within a sustainable and inclusive NHS.
Harriet is working with us at Centre for Population this year as our Resident Doctor Representative.
